The clip in question came out on Sunday and has been referenced by the Tories over and over again. While they call for the Minister of Public Safety to resign, he maintains his comments were made in justest. Leaked audio is giving Canadians a rare glimpse into what’s being said behind closed doors about Ottawa’s controversial gun buyback program. And it’s coming from the very minister in charge. In a 20-minute recording that surfaced on Sunday, public safety minister Gary Anandere can be heard expressing doubt about whether or not municipal police forces can handle the program. I I just don’t think Mun Police Services have the resources to do this. He’s speaking with a frustrated gun owner who warns of what he fears will happen if he refuses to hand his guns over. They know who I am. They know where I live. They know where they are. They’re walking in my safe. I’m going to refuse to hand them in. They’re going to come in, rip open my safe, right? Take those firearms and put me in handcuffs. My dog very much is going to go that far. and Sonuri tells them the scenario is unlikely, even offering an unexpected reassurance. I will come and bail you out if that happens. Those remarks are now political fodder. Conservatives long opposed to the buyback say the minister has undermined his government’s own plan. But his own minister of public safety says this government is doing it wrong. He was caught on tape saying the program won’t work and yet they are going to rip $750 million away from our border and police services to harass duck hunters and farmers by banning the firearms they use. Police organizations have also raised red flags. I really hope that the federal government is going to take a serious look at this gun buyback program and um you know rather than targeting law-abiding gun owners. Um let’s start targeting the individuals that are responsible for violent crime in our communities. And we can achieve that by reallocating those monies. 24 the Peele Regional Police Service reported that of the the crime guns that they seized 90% of those firearms uh had come from the United States. And what I understand is the other 10% some of those firearms had serial numbers um filed off. So they so they actually were not being able to trace them but of the guns um the total guns that they seized. Yeah. In Peele in uh in 2024 90% um had come from from the United States. And in Durham uh you know just just the other side of Toronto in 2024 Durham police uh reported that 83% of the crime guns that they seized had come from the United States. Critics like Rod Gilaka of the Canadian Coalition for Firearms Rights call the situation ironic. Ottawa asking police to carry out a program many police associations say won’t improve public safety. Well, it’s um in this case we we see I guess the uh the idea in real life that liberals tell the truth when they think no one is listening. So, the minister just confirmed that um that they know and full are fully aware that all of this gun crime, this wave of crime, crime, violence, and mayhem that’s that’s plagued Canadians over the last 10 years does not have any relationship to licensed gun owners. Despite the controversy, the public minister of safety insists his government is pressing ahead. Mr. Speaker, I was proud to launch the assault style firearm compensation program in Nova Scotia and we look forward to expanding it across Canada. This is part of a broader plan to ensure that our guns are off our street. It includes changes to the criminal code. It includes resources at the border, $ 1.3 billion investments at the border. And Mr. Speaker, Bill C2 is right in the house today. I invite the party opposite to support us so that we can get that through parliament. The government’s pilot program is set to launch next week on October 1st in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Firearm owners there will be able to use an online portal to schedule an appointment where they can bring their once legal, now prohibited firearms to be deactivated. They’ll then be issued a receipt that can be exchanged for money from the government. Since 2020, there have now been six different ministers of public safety. Prime Minister Mark Carney maintains his full confidence in the current one who took the role on back in May. .
