The local's guide who takes the RER every day

All you need is a train ticket and a bit of curiosity.

So you've just stepped off the RER A at Nogent-sur-Marne or Bry-sur-Marne? Good call. You've already made the smartest decision of your trip. Twenty-six minutes from Châtelet, and you've gone from the chaos of central Paris to a quiet valley where the river flows gently, the swans don't queue, and nobody will ask you to scan a ticket to admire the scenery.

I live here. I know every shortcut, every shaded bench, and every guinguette worth a detour. Here's everything you need to make the most of it.

How to get here

The easiest way: the RER A. Direction Marne-la-Vallée-Chessy (yes, the Disneyland station), but get off one or two stops earlier: Nogent-sur-Marne or Bry-sur-Marne. That's 26 minutes from Châtelet-Les Halles. Same line, same ticket as the big theme park a bit further down the track — except here, there's no wall of people on the platform.

By car, take the A4 motorway, exit 10 or 11. Once there, park along the quays or in the side streets: parking is free along most of the riverbank. That's considerably nicer than paying €30 to leave your car in a massive lot before entering somewhere.

Summary

RER A from Châtelet → Nogent-sur-Marne in 26 min. By car: A4 exit 10/11. Free riverside parking. No car needed once you're here.

Where to stay

The B&B Hotel Marne-la-Vallée Chelles (accessible by RER or bus from Nogent) offers modern rooms at around €60–80 per night for two. Breakfast buffet: €9.50/adult, €4.50/child. Free parking, wifi.

For something more local, try the chambres d'hôtes (guesthouses) along the Marne. In Nogent, Bry or Champigny — houses with gardens or river views, starting at €47 to €80 per night. Homemade breakfast included, and hosts who'll give you their personal recommendations.

It's quiet, authentic, and you'll fall asleep to the sound of water rather than distant fireworks.

Getting around on foot

Good news: everything is walkable from the RER stations. Nogent, Bry, Joinville — distances are human (3 to 7 km between points of interest).

To go further, use the cycling paths along the Marne canal and riverbanks. Vélib' bike-share stations are available in Nogent and surrounding towns. Renting a regular or electric bike is easy and cheap. No parking stress, no traffic jams — just the pleasure of cycling by the water.

The Marne Valley isn't a calibrated theme park. It's better: it's alive, accessible, and genuinely French. River walks, hidden islands, Sunday markets, farms, champagne tastings — there's something for every taste and every budget.

See you on the riverbanks. If you spot a local kayaking or walking their dog, don't hesitate to ask for their favourite spot. We're the sharing kind.

An RER ticket, a bit of curiosity. That's it.
